A travel guide to the island of Mallorca with lots of tips and information

Mallorca is the most popular vacation destination for Germans. More than 10 million tourists visit the island every year. The majority come from Germany and Great Britain. There are around 300,000 hotel beds available to them. Almost all vacationers on Mallorca are package holidaymakers. Most of them come for the warm climate, the beaches, the nightlife and the very well-developed tourist infrastructure. There are also millions of tourists on Mallorca every year who come to the island for other reasons: Hikers, cyclists, culture vultures, nature lovers and much more.

Mallorca has around 1 million inhabitants. Around 400,000 of them live in and around Palma. There are no other large cities on Mallorca: no other city on Mallorca has more than 30,000 inhabitants. Around 100,000, or 10%, of Mallorca’s inhabitants are German. Hardly anywhere else in the world are there so many Germans. Mallorca’s size is often underestimated: the island is 3600 square kilometers in size. If you want to get from one end of the island to the other, the road distance can easily be 150 km.

Mallorca is very different. On the one hand, there is the bay of Palma with the famous Ballermann, the symbol of mass tourism. It is the largest contiguous tourist area in Europe. The party atmosphere prevails here 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. It’s all about drinking, sex, sun and beach. But Mallorca is large and diverse: in the north of the island lies the Tramuntana mountain range, which is particularly inviting for hiking.

In the mountains you will find peace and quiet and villages with an original culture that have hardly been developed for tourism. Hiking without spending hours meeting other people is possible here. On the east coast are the quieter German family resorts such as Alcudia, Cala Millor, Cala Ratjada and Pollenca. In the center of the island you will find interesting small towns such as Manacor. Even dropouts are not yet completely banished from the island – especially around Cala Figuera in the southeast, “alternative” vacations are still possible to a limited extent. The capital Palma de Mallorca should also not be forgotten, for many people one of the most beautiful cities in Spain.

This travel guide to Mallorca briefly describes the most important vacation destinations. There is also extensive travel information and tips for tourists who want to explore Mallorca on their own by rental car, train or bus.
