Mallorca: Climate and Travel Time

Posted by

The climate on the sunny island of Mallorca varies considerably throughout the year. The summers are hot and dry, the winters mild and rainy. Overall, the sun shines on over 80% of the days of the year, and Mallorca has over 300 days of sunshine. That is significantly more than in Germany. In Berlin, the sun shines for around 1700 hours a year, and Mallorca has around 2770 hours of sunshine per year.

January and February on Mallorca: The coldest months of the year. The average daily temperature is still 15 degrees. Hotels (if open) and flights are cheaper than at any other time of year, especially after Epiphany (January 6th). In fact, larger hotels, restaurants, bars and cafés are only open in large numbers in the area around Palma (e.g. at Ballermann). In February, with the start of the almond blossom, there is a bit more going on than in January. Tourism is concentrated on the Platja de Palma. It is the time for long-term holidaymakers (mainly pensioners) and cyclists. It often rains, and at night the temperature drops to 5-10 degrees. Snow only falls in the mountains. A room with heating is definitely recommended, however. The sea is much too cold for swimming.

March and April in Mallorca: The number of tourists is steadily increasing, and there are already many holidaymakers on the island during the two weeks of the Easter holidays. Temperatures often rise above 20 degrees during the day. The best time to travel for hikers, nature lovers and amateur cyclists. It rains less and less than in winter, but there are still a few rainy days in May.

May and June in Mallorca: The climate is comparable to the German midsummer. There are many hot days, but also a few rainy days on Mallorca. Tourism is in full swing. Hotels are becoming more expensive. It is slowly getting too warm for hikers, and the number of beach holidaymakers predominates. The water is still refreshingly cool, and for some it is still too cold. Ideal time to travel for hikers and cyclists.

July and August in Mallorca: Now is the absolute high season and the climate is subtropical: practically no rain and hot almost every day (not infrequently well over 30 degrees). Finding accommodation locally is difficult, so you should definitely book in advance. Rental cars and hotels are more expensive than the rest of the year. Almost all holidaymakers head to the beach during the day and to the bars and pubs at night. For active holidays (such as hiking or cycling), Mallorca is not necessarily the best time to travel due to the heat and full hotels. Recently, the Mallorca government has made a lot of efforts to make other seasons more attractive to holidaymakers. In our opinion, spring and autumn are also the better seasons for a holiday in Mallorca, simply because of the heat and high prices in midsummer.

September and October on Mallorca: The water is still warm, the air temperatures are slowly decreasing. Ideal time for beach vacationers who don’t need the extreme heat. The daytime temperatures are usually a pleasant 23-27 degrees – a pleasant climate. However, there are short but heavy rain showers on some days. Since there are no longer school holidays in Germany and other countries in Europe, the number of families is decreasing in favor of couples and single travelers. The landscape is dried out by the dry summer climate.

November and December in Mallorca: Most hotels close at the beginning of November. In November, however, the sea is still warm enough for swimming. However, daytime temperatures are usually below 20 degrees even in November, so the weather is usually too cold for swimming. It rains quite often, but there are also a few warm days. Another disadvantage of these months is the short days. Sunset on Mallorca is at 5:30 p.m. on Christmas Day, and around 9:20 p.m. in June. At Christmas, it is usually around 15 degrees.
